Whiteside, 30, will head to Portland while Maurice Harkless and Meyers Leonard will head to Miami as part of the deal.
Whiteside bounced around the league prior to landing in Miami and really elevating his game, earning a four-year, $98.4 million max contract from Miami after the 2015-2016 season.
Whiteside had fallen out of favor with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra due to a drop in his minutes, so it makes sense that the Heat shipped him out of town.
Heat’s Bam Adebayo Discusses Team Picking Up Option
Adebayo, the Heat’s starter at center, will make $3.5 million this season, and is now guaranteed $5.1 million in the 2020-2021 season.
“It’s definitely a confidence builder,” Adebayo said, according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “It’s one of those things that a lot of guys don’t get to see, but I’m glad it happened to me. So we’re going to keep this thing going and see if we can win some more games.”
Adebayo collected 8.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists last season for Miami.
Jimmy Butler Trade Off for Now
According to The Athletic’s Tim Cato, the three-team trade between the 76ers, Heat, and Dallas Mavericks sending Butler down to Miami is off, and the Heat must now find a team other than Dallas to complete the deal.
Dallas had agreed to be the third team in the trade, with the understanding that they would get Derrick Jones Jr., but the Heat instead wanted to ship Goran Dragic to Dallas.
Dallas eventually backed off the deal saying that absorbing his deal would be too much, according to the New York Times’ Marc Stein.
Heat, Rockets Meeting with Jimmy Butler
It appears as though Philadelphia 76ers superstar Jimmy Butler will be a busy man once free agency officially kicks off on Sunday.
While Butler has been heavily linked to the Rockets, via a sign and trade deal, there is growing belief that Butler is favoring a move to South Beach to play for the Heat.
