Memphis Grizzlies center Jonas Valanciunas suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers and although initial x-rays came back negative, he will be undergoing an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, according to the team’s official website.
Valanciunas has collected 19.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for the Toronto Raptors and the Grizzlies this season.
Grizzlies’ Jonas Valanciunas to Decline $17.6 Million Option
Memphis Grizzlies’ center Jonas Valanciunas is planning to decline his $17.6 million player-option for the 2019-2020 season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Doing so will make Valanciunas an unrestricted free agent, but he is intending to negotiate a new deal with the Grizzlies where he shined following his acquisition.
Valanciunas posted 19.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game playing for the Grizzlies following the trade.
Grizzlies’ Justin Holiday Now Feeling Comfortable with New Team
Memphis Grizzlies wing Justin Holiday has overcome some initial struggles with his new team following a trade from the Chicago Bulls back in January, and is feeling more comfortable.
Holiday has showed it on the court, with an improved play of late, and has become a key component of the Grizzlies’ rotation.
“You want to come in and do well and help the team,” Holiday said, according to Omari Sankofa II of The Athletic.
“That was the biggest thing for me, and feeling like you’re being a burden at times, which, it is what it is, but that was the hardest thing for me. Not playing at the level I normally do. But understanding that it comes with being traded. I just knew it was going to take time so it was just being patient and allowing myself to understand what we want to do here and allow myself to be helped.”
Holiday’s number in February tell the story, as he is averaging 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this month.
“If I know the ins and outs of everyone’s position, where they’re supposed to be, that’s the player I am,” Holiday said. “I know everybody’s position in a play. So now I’m getting to the point where I know that and now I’m comfortable. If I know everything that’s going on, I’m good.”
Grizzlies, Hornets Working Towards Marc Gasol Trade
According to the Sporting News’ Sean Deveney, there is growing skepticism that the two teams can work out a trade despite Gasol being held out of Tuesday’s game, leading many to believe that a trade was being finalized.
Per the report:
“But league sources told Sporting News that the Hornets and Grizzlies do not have an agreement in place, and that there is increasing skepticism on both sides that a trade can be brought to bear ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. The Hornets have had interest in Gasol for some time, but a deal has not progressed.”
Gasol and teammate Mike Conley will almost certainly be moved by the deadline, but Gasol to the Hornets doesn’t seem like such a sure thing.
