Celtics’ Kyrie Irving Re-Affirms Desire to Stay in Boston, Says it’s Not All About the Money

Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving is doubling down on his comments that he wants to remain with the Boston Celtics, saying that at this point in his career, it’s not all about the money as he prepares for free agency next summer.

Irving, who turned down a contract extension this summer, spoke about his decision making process as he enters the final season of his current deal.

“To be in a position to even be considered a franchise free agent is pretty awesome,” Irving said, according to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe. “At this point in my career, it’s not so much about the money, it’s not so much about the extra curricular things, it’s like OK, where am I happy? Where am I most comfortable? Who’s going to give me that [atmosphere] where I would love to grow as a human being? I spent more time with my teammates than I do with my family and you want to be in a place where thinking about starting over again, obviously that’s what the thing you think about.”

Irving then spoke again about his preference to remain in Boston.

“You think, ‘what about a new location?’ and it’s just like I want to be comfortable and what’s better than being in Boston?” Irving asked.

“This year has felt much different because of the environment that has been created for me and by me and going to the new practice facility. There’s nothing like playing at TD Garden. “I didn’t say that to appease you guys. I actually love Boston.”

Celtics Targeting Pelicans’ Anthony Davis

The Boston Celtics are, and have been, targeting New Orleans Pelicans’ superstar forward Anthony Davis, and if the Pelicans do indeed shop him we can expect the Celtics to be major players.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics have had an interest in Davis for a long time:

“Boston has been hawking Anthony Davis for years. They always hoped that it would be—whether it’s the end of this season or the beginning of next before the trade deadline—that they would gather up all those assets, all those picks Danny Ainge has, young players, and they’d be the team to be able to get Anthony Davis.”

“But now you have L.A., and if they get shut out in free agency, they’re going to have to take all their young players to try to use them to get Anthony Davis.”

Davis is averaging 28 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2.8 blocks per game for the Pelicans this season.

Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown may be returning to action later this week after missing three straight games due to a tailbone injury, but he expects to come off the bench when he finally does return to the court.

“I believe in my ability,” Brown said, according to MassLive’s Tom Westerholm. “Coaching staff believes in my ability. If coming off bench makes sense – people make it a bigger deal than it really is. At end of the day it’s basketball. (Gordon) Hayward came off the bench & had 30 points. It’s a mindset. It’s a choice.”
