The Los Angeles Lakers certainly seem pleased with the signing of forward Michael Beasley, particularly assistant coach Jesse Mermuys who says that Beasley is one of the best isolation scorers in the league.
“Michael Beasley is one of the hardest guys to guard in the NBA,” Mermuys said, according to NBA.com’s Mike Trudell. “That’s just fact. He’s one of the best 1-on-1 players in the league. With his size and his scoring ability, he’s tough. Having a guy like that on your roster is always beneficial. You always need a bucket getter.”
Mermuys believes that Beasley’s talents will be a tremendous addition to the team.
“There are times guys just don’t have it going, there’s fatigue, there’s travel, there are schedule games that are a monster, there are back to backs,” the coach added. “There are so many things in the NBA where having a bucket getter is really valuable, so having Michael Beasley on your roster is a nice asset.”
Lakers Not Interested in Carmelo Anthony
Despite rumors to the contrary, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly not interested in adding veteran free agent forward Carmelo Anthony, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Broderick Turner.
Anthony was recently deactivated by the Houston Rockets, who he opened the season with after a much hyped signing but failed to find a suitable role with.
The report states that Anthony’s camp called the Lakers “a while back,” but it didn’t go anywhere, and also stated that Lakers’ forward LeBron James, a close friend of Anthony’s, hasn’t talked to
president of basketball operations Magic Johnson or general manager Rob Pelinka about bringing Anthony in.
James would like to see Anthony join the Lakers, but he hasn’t formally pushed the organization to make the move.
Anthony will eligible to be traded on December 15th.
Lakers’ Tyson Chandler Talks LeBron James’ Leadership
Los Angeles Lakers veteran center Tyson Chandler has been a big boost for the team since coming over following his buyout from the Phoenix Suns earlier this season, and since joining the Lakers he has been impressed by the leadership of his teammate, LeBron James.
“Honestly, I fully expect everything that he gives,” Chandler said, according to Gina Mizell of The Athletic. “He’s been incredible for the game — a Hall of Famer on and off the court for his entire career. We’re close in (draft) classes, a couple years apart, so I’ve been able to watch his journey. I had nothing but respect for him before I got in the (same) locker room, how he’s been able to juggle his success, the expectations and then just the man that he’s become is nothing but respectable.”
Chandler is thankful to be able to play alongside of James.
“I expected the leadership qualities that he has,” Chandler stated. “And I think, as a player, you just get excited when you’re playing alongside one of those types of players — one of the greats that you know, if you get them close to the finish line, they’re able to deliver.”
Lakers’ LeBron James Talks Preseason Debut
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James made his debut with his new team after signing with the Lakers this summer, and although he only played 15 minutes, he had enough time to soak in his new situation.
“I played a little bit more than expected actually and I felt pretty good,” James said of his debut.
“It was great to get back on the floor, start a new journey for myself. Hear the Lakers fans we have here in San Diego was a great feeling to go out there and hear the roar from the fans here, so very much appreciated.”
James received a huge ovation from Laker fans as he was announced in the starting lineup, and poured in 9 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
“It always feels different for me anytime you change uniforms,” James said. “Felt different when I changed from St. Vincent-St. Mary’s jersey to a Cavs jersey from a Cavs jersey to a Heat jersey back to a Cavs jersey and now being a Laker.”
“It definitely feels different. It’s going to take a little bit of time to get used to” James continued.
James also shared his impressions of teammate Brandon Ingram.
“I find rhythm with anybody that is very energetic offensively, and that’s a guy who moves without the ball, and my first assist was to him,” James said. “They just move it on the weak side, and I was able to deliver a pass to him.”
