Celtics’ Danny Ainge Discusses Isaiah Thomas’ Contributions To Team

Published

Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge knows how important former guard Isaiah Thomas, who recently signed with the Denver Nuggets, was to his team during his tenure with the Celtics.

“Isaiah added credibility to our team by making us a legitimate basketball team,” Ainge said, according to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald. “And on top of that he was very entertaining.

“But he was all-in. He was all-in for the team. He was recruiting Al Horford to come. He was recruiting Gordon Hayward to come to play with him. He’s earned a lot of respect in my eyes.

“He was a big part in the perception of our team at that time, no doubt.”

Ainge also talked about how trading Thomas was one of the hardest decisions he has had to make as a general manager.

“Are you kidding me? That was very difficult,” Ainge said.

“You know, making the deals for Isaiah and Avery (Bradley) were two of the toughest things I’ve had to do in this job. I’ll always have a fond place for those guys and root for them and cheer for their success. But, yeah, those were two hard moves to make.”

Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown may be returning to action later this week after missing three straight games due to a tailbone injury, but he expects to come off the bench when he finally does return to the court.

“I believe in my ability,” Brown said, according to MassLive’s Tom Westerholm. “Coaching staff believes in my ability. If coming off bench makes sense – people make it a bigger deal than it really is. At end of the day it’s basketball. (Gordon) Hayward came off the bench & had 30 points. It’s a mindset. It’s a choice.”

Brown’s fourth-year option guarantees his $6,534,829 cap charge for next season, while Tatum will be locked in for a  $7,830,000 cap hit for the 2019-2020 season, both moves considered to be no brainers given their development.
