Phoenix Suns superstar, and franchise cornerstone, Devin Booker is still basking in the glow of his new max extension contract, which he signed with the team last week, and recently discussed his new five-year, $158 million rookie-scale extension.
“It’s a life-changing moment for all of us,” Booker said after signing his extension, according to Michael Scotto of The Athletic. “Obviously, everybody wants to be in that situation to be a max player, and it comes at different times for people, so I think D’Angelo, I was with him yesterday, he looks at it as motivation, something that he’s going to get towards. I know Karl Towns is most likely going to do his this summer I would think, but it’s a blessing for sure.”
Booker also spoke about his friend, Brooklyn Nets’ point guard D’Angelo Russell, and his belief that Russell is ready to make a big step and earn his own max contract.
“I think he’s more focused than ever right now,” Booker said of Russell.
“Like I said earlier, everybody has…comes at different times and different opportunities. He’s in a whole new situation in Brooklyn, and I think he looked at that as a fresh start and he’s been working hard this summer. I know he’s been in New York grinding with the team and I’ve been in Los Angeles. Every time we talk on the phone it’s like, ‘I’m working’ and he’s saying the same thing. He’s locked in and ready to go.”
Suns Fans Petitioning for Robert Sarver to Sell Team
Fans are taking their disdain a step further, and have started a petition to force Sarver to sell the team.
Sarver has been brutally terrible with his running of the once proud and successful organization, with his constant meddling and micro-managing that has held the Suns team back.
The recent issues with Talking Stick Arena and Sarver, who threatened relocation before backtracking, was the breaking point for
longtime fan Josh Miller, who started a petition on the website change.org, according to The Arizona Republic.
“From their inception in 1968, through 2010, the Phoenix Suns were one of the NBA’s model franchises,” wrote Miller in the petition’s description. “The Suns were typically among contenders for the NBA championship. In their history, the Suns have won 7 division titles, and played in the NBA Finals twice. Despite not winning a championship, until recently, the Suns had the fourth highest winning percentage in NBA history.”
The petition goes on to make a plea for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to step in:
“The only solution is for Mr. Silver to force Robert Sarver to sell the team to an owner who wants to invest in the franchise and is interested in putting together a basketball team that can compete in the NBA.”
Suns Expected to Move Trevor Ariza
Amid another dreadful season, there is growing belief around the league that the Phoenix Suns will make Trevor Ariza available when December 15th, the first day players who signed free-agent contracts this past summer are eligible to be traded, rolls around.
According to the New York Times Marc Stein, Ariza, who inked a one-year, $15 million deal with Phoenix during the offseason, is a candidate to be bought out by the Suns, who did the same thing with Tyson Chandler earlier this season, although the Suns are hoping to gauge interest on the trade market for a fair return.
Ariza could be a nice spark for a team down the stretch of the season, and the Suns’ need at point guard could present an opportunity for the Suns to piece together a package featuring Ariza, to land a more permanent solution at their glaring hole at the point guard position.
Suns Targeting Santa Cruz Warriors’ Darius Morris for Short Term Solution at Point Guard
The Phoenix Suns continue to scour the free agent and trade market to find a long-term answer at the point guard position, a major hole on their roster, and will now turn their attention to a short term solution as the work towards that goal.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns are targeting G League options such as Santa Cruz’s Darius Morris following the injury to Devin Booker, who re-aggravated his left hamstring injury Sunday as Phoenix faced the Los Angeles Lakers.
Morris has been impressive thus far in the G League this season, averaging 19.5 points, and 6.7 assists per game.
