When it comes to the opinion of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, he has never been shy about sharing it in an honest and direct way, and he is doing the same when it comes to the idea of the Mavs and “tanking”.
Cuban admitted that the Mavs tanked last season and went on to say that the team, whose fan base is among the league’s most loyal, wouldn’t do the same this season.
But with Dallas owning a 18-40 record, it’s a longshot for the team to make the playoffs and Cuban is telling players that, due to their situation, losing may be the best thing for the team.
“I’m probably not supposed to say this, but I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and here we are, we weren’t competing for the playoffs” Cuban said on Julius Irving’s podcast.
“I was like, “Look, losing is our best option.” Adam would hate hearing that, but at least I sat down, and I explained it to them. And I explained what our plans were going to be this summer, that we’re not going to tank again. This was a year-and-a-half tanking, and that was too brutal for me.
But being transparent, I think that’s the key to being kind of a players owner and having stability.”
Cuban’s honesty confirms what fans and analysts have long believed, despite the league’s argument to the contrary, that teams and players “tank”.
