New Orleans Pelicans center Jahlil Okafor will undergo an X-ray on the ankle he injured during Sunday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bulls that forced the veteran to leave the United Center with crutches, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Okafor signed with New Orleans during the offseason, inking a two-year deal with only $500,000 guaranteed, and is likely to fit into a reserve role behind starters Anthony Davis and new addition Julius Randle.
Pelicans Waive Emeka Okafor
The New Orleans Pelicans have waived veteran center Emeka Okafor in a move that will allow the team to avoid paying a $100K partial guarantee that would have kicked in on September 21st, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Okafor, who made a surprise return to the NBA late last season after retiring due to health problems back in 2013, put in 4.4 ppg and 4.6 rebounds per game over 26 games for New Orleans last season, including 19 starts.
Okafor plans to continue his career.
Pelicans’ Sign Darius Morris to Two-Year, Partially Guaranteed Contract
Morris, 27, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2011 NBA Draft, and has spent time with the Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Los Angeles Clippers during his career.
Morris has also played in the G-League.
Pelicans Not Talking About Moving Anthony Davis
The New Orleans Pelicans have no plans to move superstar Anthony Davis, and are taking a patient approach to see how happy Davis remains with the franchise.
During an appearance on Jeff Goodman’s ‘The Good N’ Plenty Podcast‘, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Mannix spoke, at length, about Davis’ situation with the Pelicans.
“What everyone around the league is zeroing in on [is to see what Anthony Davis does]. They are waiting for the first time that Anthony Davis grumbles a little bit. They’re waiting to see either private or public consternation from Anthony Davis,”
“That’s the first domino to fall: once he starts griping a little bit about what’s going on there, and why they can’t put their type of team around him, that’s when you start to panic in New Orleans.”
“When I talk to people down in New Orleans – and look, they’re now fully entrenched there, I believe both the coaches and GM got extensions somewhat recently – they’re not talking about moving Anthony Davis, they’re not entertaining anything seriously about moving Anthony Davis. That could change, and probably will change once, and if, Davis starts grumbling publicly or privately about where they’re at.”
